provisional

I was commuting home, and thinking about this blog. Recalling how I’ve had a few questions lately from non-subscribers, “What do you blog about?” “Well, I’m doing it old-school. Writing about whatever comes to mind when I sit down. So it’s a lot of different stuff.”

While driving, I think: it’s provisional.
And not in a flattering way, either.

provisional: adjective, Also, provisionary
1. arranged or existing for the present, possibly to be changed later.
2. providing or serving for the time being only; existing only until permanently or properly replaced; temporary: a provisional government.
3. accepted or adopted tentatively; conditional; probationary.

If I was feeling more cheery, perhaps I’d’ve landed on improvisational, which also partakes of the present-tense sense, but then pulls in jazz’s feel of high art on the high wire. Maybe sleeping for 12 hours on Monday (or 9 1/2 hours from Monday 1pm till Tuesday 6am) is what’s pulled me down to the low beam.

Still, I can’t help myself. I yank on my provisional blog and “provision” spills out,

full of Army mess tents and picnic baskets. The Hebrew scriptures are full of provisions in just this way, food for the various journeys of the participants across the big story of God’s work in the world.

God and provision. Hmmmm….

I did a bunch of school-writing today, so there’s not much juice left in this… I was going to say lemon, but I’m not that sour and maybe pumpkin (a la Cinderella) is a truer choice… pumpkin.

Nevertheless, here I am sitting as if with yesterday’s bread and a few fish (smoked, I hope, rather than formerly fresh), blessing it as I sit with you a little while. Thank you, God, for your provisions… and when they come, your visions.
